Spammers targets Facebook, twitter with new wave of viruses.

If you like Social networking via Internet, take a look at this story very closely. SNS (Social Networking Sites) like Facebook and Twitter are sweating out day and night to prevent hackers from exploiting their sites from new form of virus, dubbed as Social Media virus or Social Spam.

According to Imperium, a company devoted to fight social spam, according to their Social Spam Index, as much as 40% of public profiles across social networks are now fraudulent. Roughly 400 million Facebook users, for example, are victimized by social spam each day.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that 4% of Facebook posts and 1.5% of Tweets are now spam related. In contrast, more than 70% of all email is currently spam. However, email spam is trending downward (from 92.2% in August 2010) as preventive measures have become more sophisticated and better at blocking email attacks. Facebook, which says that the volume of spam is outpacing its user base, now blocks 200 million spam-related actions daily.

In response to the growth in spam and hacking related activities, Facebook and Twitter had decided to build a strong security team. Since 2008, Facebook’s security team has grown from four engineers to 30 engineers and plans more. Whereas, Micro-blogging site Twitter has similar plans. By end of 2012, Twitter plans to expand their security team from two to five engineers.
